This past weekend I joined Movie Menu Reviews to be a guest reviewer for the new feature film Self/less. This would be my first time reviewing on a podcast and I was a bit excited to say the least. Previously I was on MMR to be interviewed for a new segment that focused on upcoming filmmakers. I couldn't wait to sit down and discuss what worked and didn't work for this film.
As I got to the studio I was greeted by Mike Stand and Alexander Z, but Dan "The Man" Munoz was nowhere to be found. It turns out that Dan made a trip down to San Diego for Comic-Con. I can not describe the feelings of envy I had for him and everyone else who attended. Going to SDCC is definitely at the top of my bucket list, hopefully I'll have better luck next year. We sat down and began to geek out once again at old movies and new releases, in a sense it was a nice warm up for things to come. MMR has an intriguing rating system, a film is either considered a Dine-In (watch it in theaters), Takeout (watch it at home), or Leftovers (toss it in the trash). When giving the review, two people on the panel (who have already seen the film) must convince a third panel member (who hasn't seen the film), to either watch it or not. I must say that Self/less was a movie that had great potential in exploring a fascinating concept, but unfortunately fell short due to plot holes and inconstancies. If you would like to hear why or you're wondering why this blog post is titled "From Self/less to Selfish", you can listen to our review here. Side note, we give spoilers towards the end of the review but we do give a warning, so don't worry. I look forward to future podcasts with Movie Menu Reviews, they have a great team with an equally great passion and appreciation for films. - Manuel Montanez
